Here are four simple tips to help your kids improve their mental health, especially for kids with ADHD, anxiety, and depression.
1. Exercise. We know how exercise improves our overall health, but research is clear that it helps our brain function and reduces mental health symptoms. USA Today published a study three years ago that reported that exercise was the number one factor in reduction of mental health symptoms. Research is now also indication that “green” exercise, or movement that happens outside, has an even greater impact.
2. Sleep. You kid needs 9-10 hours of sleep. In a study done in 2017 found that only 17% of middle and high school students get the amount of sleep they need. I also have bad news, we know that screen time is killing our sleep. Research indicates that we need to be away from screens one hour before bed. I highly recommend “Glow Kids” for more info.
3. Diet. New research indicates that neurotransmitters that help regulate our emotions get created in our stomach. Poor diets have a huge impact on how we feel. I am no dietician, but eating small meals / snacks throughout the day with lots of water is a difference maker!
4. Medication / Relaxation / Prayer. Our kids need skills to relax and find calm after a long and challenging day. I like the calm app, but go on youtube, get a book, or simple do deep breathing.
